Kids
love both beads and music, right? It's a natural
opening to begin conversation on tough issues.
Here's how it might work: Schools often use "Beads on
One String" as the theme for their whole year by using
our "Curriculum Connection" as developed by the Director
of Education at St. Cloud State University.
In
their Music education class, students learn the song, sometimes
even in sign language. Art teachers have fun with projects,
making beads or symbolic beads with the kids. Social Studies
and other disciplines tackle the issues the school wants to
address while relating to certain pages in the book. To top it
off, the Principal plays the CD of the uptempo song as
a lead in to morning announcements.
In
this way, the entire school comes together to learn about our
"connectedness", singing and laughing while creating
clever art projects. Schools everywhere tell us "The Beads
On One String Project" is much more fun and effective
than traditional lecture methods.
But
that's not all. The project culminates with the Dennis Warner
Concert. The students look forward to this and eagerly participate.
Dennis is respected not only in music circles for his eight CDs,
but also in the education community. (Read
Dennis' Bio). His concert includes an entertaining
Powerpoint presentation on how the song came about as well as
a reading of the book with personal stories that captivate
an audience.
With humor, fun and music, Warner drives home the important
message students have received from their teachers.
